From poverty to finding a charity – The story of Yad Ezra V'Shulamit

Yad Ezra V'Shulamit is a philanthropic and humanitarian charity organization based in Israel which offers a helping hand to the poor families to overcome poverty. This organization was founded in 1998 and they started off by providing baskets of food to 50 local families. Since 1998, they kept expanding their program gradually into a nation-wide operation which comprised of weekly distribution of food, holiday distribution of food baskets, child centers offering food to more than 500 children in a day and youth clubs helping more than 8000 teenagers who are at risk to get back on the right track.

They are the ones who understood that poverty doesn’t come from vacuum and over the years, the charity expanded its services to more than just offering food. They invented programs like empowering teens-at-risk with various activities, academic offers for children who are underprivileged and vocational guidance and training. As per social welfare reports, it is being seen that one-third of the Israeli kids are growing below the poverty line. But Yad Ezra V'Shulamit is proud enough to have helped around 100,000 individuals in breaking down the cycle of poverty.

A few words on the Founder himself

Aryeh Lurie was the founder of this charity organization and he was born in an impoverished family. He later on became both the director and founder of Yad Ezra V'Shulamit and made a promise to himself to fight against the challenges of poverty, help them obtain financial stability and also help others in doing the same. The name of the organization is done after his parents and he built values of kindness and charity as they are instilled in his family. Lurie runs this charity just as he controls his personal life with remarkable sense of wellbeing for every Jew.

A sneak peek into their Projects

Feed a Baby: Among the families living below the line of poverty, there are thousands of babies who miss their meals almost everyday. They have increased chances of suffering from serious challenges in their mental and physical development phase. Through the generous contributions of people, Yad Ezra V'Shulamit’s Baby Center delivers baby food, baby formula, wipes, diapers to hundreds of new mothers who are in dire need.

Food Baskets: Yad Ezra V'Shulamit gives back the lost dignity to the Jewish families by distributing 3000 food baskets in various cities through Israel. Baskets are usually full of fish, chicken, fruits, beans, vegetables, grains, oil, pasta and challah, which is enough for a full family to have. During the holidays, the number is increased to more than 15,000 food baskets.

Teens-at-risk: Yad Ezra V'Shulamit has 37 youth clubs with more than 3000 teens from age 14 to 22 attending the clubs. YES offers them a good alternative to the streets for many of teens-at-risk youth. For the younger boys, they help them retain their school, go for tuitions, meet teachers and improve relations between parents and teachers.

Amidst all the chaos that Israel goes through, this organization called Yad Ezra V'Shulamit is trying their best to restore equality among the poverty-stricken people in whatever way they can help them.
